Step 3: 11 Solutions dos and don’ts tips

Global Issues Problem Solving Process Step 3

Solutions in step 3 need to respond to the underlying problem in step 2. Solutions must apply to the action goal in the key verb phrase. Students should also explain what the solution will do to accomplish the desired result that they identified in their purpose.

#1 Demonstrate mastery of the fundamental concepts

Solutions are a great place to demonstrate research, creativity, and futuristic thinking. Prepare by researching new technologies and future trends. During practice, brainstorm creative ideas or use those found in research to make the ideas more futuristic. During competition, remember to explain how futuristic elements will work. Build off of what is possible today and extend the idea into the future. Just remember, your ideas must always be focused on the underlying problem!

#2 Address the key verb phrase

Make sure solutions are following the action goal you identified in your key verb phrase. If your underlying problem asks “how might we create new products” then you must make sure each solution is a new product, rather than improving old ones.

#3 Support the purpose

When an underlying problem is well-crafted, solution ideas that address the key verb phrase often already support the purpose without a need for more detail. If you are not sure that a reader would be able to understand how the solution will accomplish the goals of the underlying problem, you should explain the connection.

#4 Use “will”

Unlike in challenges, you should use the verb “will” in your solutions. You’re proposing a solution that you think will solve the problem you’ve identified. Be confident!

#5 Respond without repeating

Just stating that your solution fits with your key verb phrase and purpose does not make it convincing. You must explain how the idea will address the key verb phrase. Also explain how or why it will support the purpose, if it is not obvious.

#6 Remember the future scene

Do not contradict future scene information. Your solutions should operate within the boundaries set by the future scene. You do not need to write the parameters in your ideas, but be sure to think about how each solution idea fits into the context of the scene.

#7 Consider many perspectives

Reflect on the categories list and how they may spark a solution idea. You can earn more points if you have a diverse set of ideas. Consider the different stakeholders from the scene and your research. This may help you develop more ideas.

#8 Elaborate your ideas

To earn the highest points, you must provide details on who, how, and why in your solution. Your initial idea is what the solution is. To support your elaboration, consider these questions: How does the solution work? Why does it solve your underlying problem? Who will implement the solution?

#9 Use the right “who”

Remember, the “who” must have the power, interest, or expertise to implement the solution. If the name of your “who” does not easily convey that, you should add more information. Today’s celebrities, politicians, and influencers may not be the appropriate “who” in many futuristic solutions. Using “we,” “they,” or other pronouns is not enough to count as a “who.”

#10 Avoid magic

Imaginative inventions are fun, but inventions do not necessarily happen just because someone says they will. Sometimes, inventions are “magical thinking” or in opposition to the laws of nature. You should include some level of explanation about how the invention will work. Creativity, detail, and clarity can turn an unbelievable idea full of magic into an impressive, well-thought-out solution.

#11 Check for duplicates

Be sure to communicate your ideas with your team. Check for ideas that are accidentally too similar. You are all working from the same underlying problem, so similarities are to be expected. Consider how to differentiate solution ideas that feel too close to copies.

A seasoned educator, April Michele has served as the Executive Director since 2018 and been with Future Problem Solving more than a decade. Her background in advanced curriculum strategies and highly engaging learning techniques translates well in the development of materials, publications, training, and marketing for the organization and its global network. April’s expertise includes pedagogy and strategies for critical and creative thinking and providing quality educational services for students and adults worldwide.

Prior to joining Future Problem Solving, April taught elementary and middle grades, spending most of her classroom career in Gifted Education. She earned the National Board Certification (NBPTS) as a Middle Childhood/Generalist and later served as a National Board Assessor for the certification of others. She was trained and applied the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Humanities, which helped widen the educational scope and boundaries beyond the U.S. In addition, April facilitated the Theory and Development of Creativity course for state level certification of teachers. She has also collaborated on a variety of special projects through the Department of Education.

A graduate of the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s in Elementary Education and the University of South Florida with a master’s in Gifted Education, April’s passion is providing a challenging curriculum for 21st century students so they are equipped with the problem solving and ethical leadership skills they need to thrive in the future. As a board member in her local Rotary Club, she facilitates problem solving in leadership at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). She is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute and earned her certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Edyth Bush Institute at Rollins College.
